Sixty-three patients (ages, 12 months to 8 years) underwent myringotomy and tympanostomy tubes (with the Gelfoam/glue procedure) to treat chronic otitis media. They were evaluated preoperatively, immediately postoperatively, at 1 month, and at 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively for hearing, language, and behavior. Otitis media with effusion (OME) was defined as thick fluid in the middle ear at more than two examinations or a single examination of fluid with effusion score greater than 3. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed rank test and the one-way analysis of variance test. OME recurred in 53 (84.1%) of the children. The mean overall score for the Glasgow Coma Scale was 3.8. The mean pure-tone average for the right and left ears was 27.3 and 28.2 dB, respectively. The mean average, tympanogram, and 2,000-Hz hearing was 90.4, 26.8, and 87.2 dB, respectively. A significant change in hearing was observed in patients with and without OME in the month after surgery. However, the difference in the 2 groups was not significant.
